From the start of 2022, there have been a number of unusual rainfall and landslide disasters in Brazil that have been reported by various global news agencies. The report by Prof. Masato Kobiyama, Hydraulic Research Institute, Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, discusses the unusual rainfall intensity and heavy rainfall triggered shallow landslides, debris flows and flash floods in Petr¨®polis City which is located in mountain region of Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The social elements associated to residents' vulnerability and exposure has further intensified this tragedy. The report also shares the number of human deaths of hydrological disasters in Petr¨®polis city during the period from 1966 to 2022 February and investments needed to enhance disaster risk reduction (DRR) education.
